If you’re just starting your freelance career, it can be easy to feel like a fraud at
times. You’re learning a new skill, navigating a new world of business, and you can’t
quite figure out how to land clients (or even make ends meet). The fear of being
found out as a “fake” is a very real thing for many freelancers. The good news is,
true confidence is a practice. Developing it takes time, but there are plenty of
tactics you can use to grow your confidence and help you stop worrying about being
a fake freelancer.
One way to get started is by creating a “victory file.
” A physical or digital folder
where you save client testimonials, positive feedback, successful project outcomes,
and small wins that demonstrate your competence. When you begin feeling like a
fraud, pull out this file to remind yourself that your fears are unfounded.
Another way to build your confidence is by creating a professional brand that
differentiates you from other freelancers in your niche. This includes developing
your brand values, defining your ideal client, and using the skills you’re best at to
attract high-quality leads.
Finally, connecting with other freelancers is a great way to realize you’re not alone
in your insecurity. You’ll see that everyone struggles with imposter syndrome from
time to time, and you can learn from their experiences and offer your own support
when needed.
Lastly, it’s important to remember that failure and rejection are part of the freelance
journey. Instead of seeing these challenges as a sign that you’re not good enough,
think of them as opportunities to improve your work and better understand how to
land more quality clients in the future.
Ultimately, you’ll find that the more you push yourself outside of your comfort zone
and into the new world of freelance, the more confident you will become.
Overcoming imposter syndrome isn’t a quick process, but it’s one that can be
accomplished by practicing positivity, getting support from others, and building your
skills. By implementing these strategies, you’ll soon be able to stop worrying about
being a fake freelancer and start living your life the way you want it.
